Fire safety prevention month is in March

Fire safety is an important aspect of home and workplace safety. A fire can break out anywhere and at any time because of unexpected causes such as a power overload, a short circuit, a kitchen accident or a lightning strike.

Fire safety is the set of practices intended to reduce the destruction caused by fire. Fire safety measures include those that are intended to prevent ignition of an uncontrolled fire, and those that are used to limit the development and effects of a fire after it starts.
The following common safety measures in the home help to minimize the risk of fire:
1) Matchboxes, burning stoves, open fires and electrical gadgets should be kept out of reach of children. They should not be left unattended. Keep matches and lighters safely stowed away from children.
2) A burning candle or a flame should never be in the room when one goes to bed. Lighted kerosene lamps and candles can be overturned by wind or rats, whilst one is asleep causing dangerous fires.

3) Window or door curtains should not be allowed to blow over open flames.

4)  Kerosene, petrol, diesel, varnishes and turpentine oil are highly inflammable and if stored in the house should have proper air-tight containers.
5) Any inflammable substance used for household cleaning should never be brought near an open flame. Never store combustible items/materials near heat sources.
6) No one should smoke while in bed. Properly extinguish cigarette butts before throwing them into the rubbish chute.
7) Do not switch on appliances and electrical outlets when not in use or after leaving your home.
8) Do not overload electrical outlets.
9) Install smoke detectors to alert you to the presence of smoke.
10) Do not overcharge your mobile devices such as hand phones and tablets by leaving them to charge overnight.
11) Check for broken wires and exposed wiring and if you find any replace them.
12) Keep a 1-kg dry powder fire extinguisher in case of emergency.
